Location Recommended for New Hospital

The Intergovernmental Planning Committee (IPC) and Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital & Clinics (SPMHC) are recommending a site location that allows SPMHC to take the next step toward developing its new healthcare campus near Hwy 12.  Conceptual designs place buildings on the southeast section of the parcel, approximately four-tenths mile south of County Hwy PF, compatible with the Sauk Prairie Airport.  The site will allow for access roads, parking, as well as future expansion.

In 2010 the IPC — comprised of representatives from the Villages of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac, and the Town of Prairie du Sac — and the hospital agreed to a memorandum of understanding outlining the process to identify the site location for the future hospital campus to take through the formal approval process.  After eliminating the hospital’s current location and adjacent properties from consideration last October, the IPC and SPMHC evaluated other potential sites and finalized their recommendation at their May 4 meeting.

Each of the three municipal governing boards will review the IPC recommendation and take action at their respective town or village board meetings.  If endorsed, the hospital can proceed to the next stage of the municipal development approval process.

“The IPC had to look at this from the viewpoint of the entire Sauk Prairie community and how land will be used well into the future,” explained Alan Wildman, Village of Prairie du Sac administrator and IPC spokesperson.  “Everyone was at the table in the spirit of what’s best for the community and hospital long-term. Of all the options, the IPC and SPMHC were able to reach consensus on this site.”

“We weighed the pros and cons of several properties that could support a project of this scale,” said SPMHC CEO Larry Schroeder.  “During our discussions we had the opportunity to better understand each other’s needs. We went through a rigorous process to get where we are and I appreciate the time and dedication of all of the IPC participants.”

“The public will have opportunities to give input on the site and the hospital’s plans at various public meetings throughout the approval process since the site will require changes to the Comprehensive Plan, rezoning and annexation into the Village of Prairie du Sac,” Wildman added.

“We take great pride in serving our community by providing high quality care and boosting the economy with hundreds of jobs and local purchases,” commented Schroeder.  “This is an important strategic step for our hospital to remain strong, independent and locally controlled.”

SPMHC is now working on the initial design phase with Kahler/Slater Architects and has hired Kraemer Brothers, LLC as the construction contractor.
